Connect to a Dymo Printer

This article will show you how to set up your Dymo software and get started with Check-Ins. Use this Printer Check Page to help you troubleshoot which part of this process might be getting tripped up.

Dymo printers are only compatible with machines that allow the Dymo software to be installed (Mac and Windows) and have a USB port. You can use an iPad or Android device with Dymo by printing to another station. Go to the Supported Labels & Printers page to choose the correct labels and printer before purchasing.

Install the Dymo Software

Once your printer is plugged into your machine, download and install the Dymo Label Software for Mac or Windows to ensure you have the latest version.

Walk through installing the software and the Dymo widget. Once it's installed, select print at the bottom right of the software to make sure it's working properly. If it doesn't work at that point, try restarting your computer and/or reinstalling the software from the website.

Test the Dymo Widget

When you first start up the Dymo software, you should see a prompt to install the Dashboard widget. Once installed, you'll see a widget in your toolbar. On Mac, you'll see a Dymo logo at the top of your computer. On a Windows device, you'll see it on the bottom right in the System tray.

Dymo Widget

If you don't see this prompt to install the widget, you might have an older version of Dymo. Grab the latest version and reinstall.

To test the plugin:

  1. Open your station.
  2. Click on the icon in the toolbar/system tray and select Diagnose. Verify everything is green on that page.
  3. Go to our Printer Check Page, and verify everything is green on that page.

If it's all green, you're ready to start printing! If not, check out the Troubleshooting section below.

If the printer isn't showing all green, or it isn't working properly, go through a Clean Install, or choose an issue and follow the steps to fix it.

Try the Windows/Mac Check-Ins App instead of a browser station.

We created the Windows/Mac app to avoid issues with browser updates blocking communication between Check-Ins and the Dymo Web Service.

When you install the app, it creates a new Check-Ins Station, so you may need to update station templates that pointed to your old browser station.

Clean Install

  1. Unplug the printer from the computer.
  2. Uninstall the current version of the Dymo software as an Administrator on the computer:
    • Windows: Programs > Uninstall Programs AND delete the printer from the Devices & Printers page
    • Mac: Delete from the Applications folder, empty Trash, AND delete the printer from Printers & Scanners page
  3. Complete any pending computer updates.
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Install the latest version of the Dymo software for all user profiles. You will be prompted on the final step to plug in the computer.
Select "complete install" for the Dymo Web Service to be installed to print.
  6. Reboot the computer.
  7. Open the Dymo Label Software
  8. Make sure the System Tray/Toolbar shows the Dymo logo, which ensures the Dymo Web Service has started.
  9. Launch the Check-Ins App.
  10. Check in someone who should print a label.

Rebooting your computer both times is the key, so please do not skip those steps.

Reset the Printer

To refresh the printer, unplug the power cord from the printer for a full 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. When you plug it back in, make sure the connection is secure. If it feels loose, that could cause connection problems and you might need a new printer/usb-c.

Multiple Printers Installed

Go to Devices and Printers in the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac). Make sure there is only one instance of the Dymo printer installed, and that it's set to be your default printer.

If you have multiple Dymo printers installed, you will need to move the inactive one. To figure out which one that is:

  1.  Unplug your Dymo printer from the computer.
  2.  Right click the one that did not become greyed out when you unplugged the printer.
  3. Select Remove Device (Windows) or click the minus button (-) on the bottom right (Mac).
Update Drivers/Software

You will need to make sure you're using the right Dymo Drivers. To find out what version of the Dymo Software you have follow these steps:

  1. Open the Dymo Software.
  2. Windows: Select Help in your toolbar, then select About Dymo
Mac: Select DYMO Label in your toolbar and then About Dymo

You will want to have Dymo 8.5.3 or higher.

  1. Completely uninstall the version you currently have installed.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Download and Install the latest version.
  4. Restart your computer.

Restarting your computer both times is the key, so please do not skip those steps.

If your issue isn't listed here, chat with other people in our Slack Community or contact support using the ? in the app.
